People and animals Attacked by Tiger ๐Ÿฏ and Leopard ๐Ÿ† at near chorla ghat.

On the heels of the news of a tiger and leopard being caught on the camera traps in the forest of Satre in Sattari, a tiger has now been sighted in the forested area of the Chorla Ghats on the Panaji-Belagavi road.

Images of the tiger and leopard were captured on a camera by a public.

Drives of vehicles passes along the route said that tiger and leopard sighting was common and that they spotted the big cat at least 2-3 times in a fortnight.

The images of the feline in the forest of Satre were identified as that of a tigre whose images have been caught on several earlier occasions on cameras put up by the Goa Forest Department.

Tiger sightings are not rare in the areas of the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and its vicinity. The presence of a tigress in these areas was repeatedly proved. However, this time, a camera trap installed by a private research organization got images of the male adult tiger. Over the last decade this tiger killed many cows and buffaloes, forcing the dhangar family residing in Ponsuli to migrate in a downhill area of Sattari,” member of the Vivekanand Environment Awareness Brigade, Keri-Sattari, Narayan Harishchandra Gawas said.

Before the onset of the monsoon, the images of two tigers and around four cubs were captures from the area, prompting the Maharashtra government to make plans to convert the Tillari region around the water reservoir into a wildlife sanctuary. This will help develop the area as a habitat and corridor by providing long-term conservation of the Western Ghats region.

After finalizing 35 locations with the help of wildlife expert Girish Punjabi, the Kolhapur Forest Division of Maharashtra had installed 80 camera traps and in the last week of March 2015 had got images of a tiger in Kodal of Tillari region. Images also showed presence of herbivorous as well as other carnivorous animals. Presence of the tiger outside the protected area has been repeatedly felt in this region.

“The forested areas of Tillari and the Mhadei valleys bordering Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka need to be protected as a tiger habitat and along with this fresh water resources of the region should be protected,” wildlife rescuer Amrut Singh said.
